Due to its mention of Allah's countless blessings, Surah An-Nahl is also known as "Surah An-Ni'am" (Surah of Blessings).
Its central theme is to establish Tawheed and refute shirk by narrating Allah's countless blessings upon mankind, while commanding justice ('Adl), kindness (Ihsan), and fulfilling the rights of relatives, and forbidding indecency, evil, and transgression.
- Rainwater, through which crops, olives, dates, and grapes grow.
- Cattle, from which mankind gets clothing, food, and means of transport.
- The sea, from which fresh meat and ornaments are obtained.
- The healing honey produced by the honeybee.
Definition
Taghut: everything that makes a person heedless of the remembrance of Allah.
Two groups are mentioned: the deniers of the truth, who are ungrateful for Allah's blessings, commit shirk, and fabricate lies; and the believers, who adopt piety and act upon justice and kindness.
'Adl means giving someone exactly their due right; Ihsan means giving more than what is due.
Rule
An-Nahl 16:89 — وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ فِيْ كُلِّ اُمَّةٍ شَهِيْدًا عَلَيْهِمْ مِّنْ اَنْفُسِهِمْ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ شَهِيْدًا عَلٰي هٰؤُلَاۤءِ ۠ وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَّهُدًى وَّرَحْمَةً وَّبُشْرٰى لِلْمُسْلِمِيْنَ — Translation: And (remember) the Day when We will raise up in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We will bring you as a witness against these. And We have sent down to you the Book as a clear explanation of everything, and as guidance, mercy, and glad tidings for the Muslims.
An-Nahl 16:90 — اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَاْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْاِحْسَانِ وَاِيْتَآئِ ذِی الْقُرْبٰى وَ يَنْهٰى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاۤءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ — Translation: Indeed, Allah commands justice, kindness, and giving to relatives their due rights, and He forbids indecency, evil, and transgression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.
Definition
The surah condemns idol-worship, explaining that idols possess no power over anything, so all authority belongs to Allah alone. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is described as equal to a whole nation by himself — obedient to Allah, a true monotheist, grateful, free from any trace of shirk. The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to follow Ibrahim's excellent example (Uswa-e-Hasanah), inviting people to Allah's way with wisdom and good exhortation, debating in the best manner, and remaining patient without grieving.
- Two principles of Dawah: inviting people with wisdom (Hikmah); advising with good exhortation, and if debate is needed, conducting it in the best manner.
- Zikr = the Quran; Tibyan = a clear exposition; At-Tayyibat = pure/good things; Al-Fahsha = indecency; Al-Khabith = impure things.
