Surah Al-Mu'minun

Definition

Surah Al-Mu'minun is the 23rd surah of the Quran, a Makki surah with six ruku and 118 verses.

Its central theme is the call to follow the Holy Prophet ﷺ, opening with the qualities of the successful believers.

Hadith on its first ten verses: Hazrat Umar (RA) narrates that when these verses were revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever fulfils them will enter Paradise," then recited from "Successful indeed are the believers" up to the tenth verse.

Rule

Al-Mu'minun 23:1-4 — قَدْ اَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ الَّذِیْنَ هُمْ فِیْ صَلَاتِهِمْ خٰشِعُوْنَ وَالَّذِیْنَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُوْنَ وَالَّذِیْنَ هُمْ لِلزَّکٰوةِ فٰعِلُوْنَ — Translation: Successful indeed are the believers — those who are humble in their prayers, and those who turn away from vain talk, and those who are observant of Zakat.

Al-Mu'minun 23:8-11 — وَالَّذِیْنَ هُمْ لِاَمٰنٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رٰعُوْنَ وَالَّذِیْنَ هُمْ عَلٰی صَلَوٰتِهِمْ یُحَافِظُوْنَ اُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْوٰرِثُوْنَ الَّذِیْنَ یَرِثُوْنَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِیْهَا خٰلِدُوْنَ — Translation: And those who are true to their trusts and their covenant, and those who carefully maintain their prayers — it is they who are the heirs, who will inherit Al-Firdaus; they will abide therein forever.

Definition

Man was created from an essence of clay, then made into a nutfah (sperm-drop) placed in a firm lodging (the womb); then a clot (alaqah); then a lump of flesh (mudghah); then bones; then bones clothed with flesh; then brought into being as a new creation. "Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators." This proves Allah's Oneness and power, and the reality of resurrection — this mention strengthens belief in the Hereafter.

Definition

The story of Prophet Nooh (AS) is narrated: his people rejected him as a mere human, so by Allah's command he built a ship; the believers and pairs of creatures were saved while rejecters were drowned in the flood. Successive nations who rejected other messengers were likewise destroyed, including Pharaoh's people after Musa and Harun (AS) were sent to them. Prophet Isa (AS) and his mother are mentioned as a sign of Allah. All prophets were commanded to eat good things and do righteous deeds; their religion (din) is one, though people later divided it into sects.

Definition

The disbelievers of Makkah denied the Messenger merely because he was human like them, and denied being raised again after becoming dust and bones — though they themselves admit, when asked, that the earth, heavens and the Mighty Throne belong to Allah. On the Day of Judgment, those whose scale of good deeds is heavy will be successful, while those whose scale is light will have lost their souls and abide in Hell forever. The surah closes affirming that Allah did not create mankind without purpose; all must return to Him, ending with the prayer: "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of those who show mercy."
