Definition
"Al-An'am" (اَلْاَنْعَام) means cattle/livestock; its singular form is "An-Na'am" (اَلنَّعَمُ).
The central theme of Surah Al-An'am is the belief in the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed), Prophethood (Risalah), the Hereafter, and the rules of social/community life.
Excellence (Fadeelat): the Holy Prophet ﷺ said regarding the first seven long surahs of the Quran, of which Al-An'am is one, that whoever masters these first seven long surahs is a great scholar (Musnad Ahmad: 8336).
Definition
The surah opens by inviting reflection on the creation of the universe, the heavens, the earth and mankind, presenting undeniable arguments for Tawheed alongside Allah's attributes and power.
It then addresses Prophethood and details of the Hereafter (the Day of Judgment), and records the objections of the disbelievers and polytheists against Islam's basic beliefs, together with excellent responses.
After the arguments for Tawheed, the surah discusses matters of lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram), refuting the self-invented rules of the polytheists, and mentions Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and other Prophets who invited their peoples to Tawheed and warned against shirk.
The surah concludes (verses 151–153) with ten fundamental moral and social commandments, so that mankind may remain firm on Allah's straight path.
Definition
Based on their self-fabricated beliefs, the polytheists set aside a portion of certain animals and crops for Allah and a separate portion for their idols.
They themselves arbitrarily declared some animals lawful and others unlawful, and considered some animals lawful only for men while forbidden for women — rules with no basis in revelation.
Remember
The Prophet ﷺ was advised to convey the truth clearly and plainly; not to grieve over the disbelievers' rejection and turning away; not to drive away the believers who call upon their Lord; and to declare that he does not possess Allah's treasures or knowledge of the unseen, but only follows what is revealed to him.
Rule
Verse 151 — وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا اَوْلَادَكُمْ مِّنْ اِمْلَاقٍ ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكُمْ وَاِيَّاهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ۖ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِيْ حَرَّمَ اللّٰهُ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ — Translation: And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We provide for you and for them. And do not go near indecent acts, whether open or hidden. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right.
Verse 152 — وَلَا تَقْرَبُوْا مَالَ الْيَتِيْمِ اِلَّا بِالَّتِيْ هِيَ اَحْسَنُ حَتّٰي يَبْلُغَ اَشُدَّهٗ ۖ وَاَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَالْمِيْزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا اِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَاِذَا قُلْتُمْ فَاعْدِلُوْا وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبٰي ۖ وَبِعَهْدِ اللّٰهِ اَوْفُوْا — Translation: And do not go near the property of an orphan, except in a way that is best, until he reaches his maturity. And give full measure and weight with justice. We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a close relative. And fulfil the covenant of Allah.
Verse 153 — وَاَنَّ هٰذَا صِرَاطِيْ مُسْتَقِيْمًا فَاتَّبِعُوْهُ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيْلِهٖ ۚ ذٰلِكُمْ وَصّٰىكُمْ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ — Translation: And indeed, this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other ways, for they will lead you away from His way. This is what He has enjoined upon you, so that you may become righteous.
