Definition
Surah Al-Kahf is the 18th surah of the Quran, a Makki surah with twelve ruku and 110 verses. "Kahf" means cave.
Its central theme is protection from four great trials — the trial of religion, of wealth, of knowledge, and of power — illustrated through four accounts.
Definition
A group of young believers fled the oppression of a tyrant king who forced people into idol-worship, and took refuge in a cave. Allah caused them to sleep for 309 years before raising them again.
Purpose: to affirm the truth of resurrection on the Day of Judgment — just as Allah preserved the youths and their dog and awakened them after centuries of sleep, He is equally able to raise all the dead back to life; and to show that Allah protects those who take refuge in Him for their faith.
Definition
A wealthy but arrogant man boasted of his wealth and denied the Hereafter before his believing companion, who advised him to attribute all blessings to Allah. The man's gardens were subsequently destroyed — a lesson that worldly wealth is a temporary trial and does not endure.
Definition
Musa (AS) sought out a righteous servant of Allah possessing special knowledge and journeyed with him. Khidr (AS) performed three seemingly objectionable acts: (1) made a hole in poor fishermen's boat to save it from a tyrant king seizing every sound boat; (2) killed a boy who would have grown up to bring grief and disbelief upon his righteous parents; (3) repaired a wall in an inhospitable town, because beneath it lay a treasure belonging to two orphan boys, hidden there by their righteous father for when they reached maturity. Each act, seemingly objectionable, contained hidden wisdom and mercy — teaching that Allah's knowledge encompasses what appears strange to human eyes.
Definition
Dhul-Qarnain was a righteous, powerful king to whom Allah granted authority and resources. He travelled to the far west and east, and upon reaching a nation troubled by Yajuj and Majuj (descendants of Yafith, son of Prophet Nooh AS), built a strong barrier of iron blocks and molten copper between two mountains to protect them — attributing his success entirely to Allah's mercy rather than his own power. The eventual emergence of Yajuj and Majuj from behind this barrier is one of the signs of the approaching Day of Judgment.
Rule
Al-Kahf 18:10 (prayer for ease in tasks and mercy) — رَبَّنَآ اٰتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَّهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ اَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا — Translation: Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance in our affair.
Al-Kahf 18:110 — قُلْ اِنَّمَآ اَنَا۠ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحٰىٓ اِلَيَّ اَنَّمَآ اِلٰهُكُمْ اِلٰهٌ وَّاحِدٌ ۚ فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوا لِقَآءَ رَبِّهٖ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَّلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهٖٓ اَحَدًا — Translation: Say: I am only a human being like you; it has been revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.
