Definition
Surah Ar-Ra'd is the 13th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah with six ruku and 43 verses, opening with the disjointed letters "Alif-Lam-Meem-Ra".
"Ra'd" means thunder — the rumbling sound produced by the clashing of clouds, one of the signs of Allah's power and majesty.
Its central theme is the affirmation of Tawheed and the condemnation of shirk, presented through proofs of Allah's perfect power and the contrasting qualities/fates of believers and disbelievers.
- The heavens raised without visible pillars, and Allah's establishing Himself upon the Throne.
- The sun and moon made subservient, running for an appointed term.
- The earth spread out with mountains and rivers set in it, and diverse fruits and crops grown in it.
Definition
Through the parable of thunder, lightning, and a flood, the surah illustrates truth versus falsehood: just as the useless foam of a flood is swept away while the water that benefits people remains in the earth, falsehood perishes while truth endures.
Definition
Believers fulfil Allah's covenant and do not break the pledge; they join the ties Allah has ordered to be joined (silah rahmi), fear their Lord and dread the evil reckoning, establish prayer, spend in Allah's way, and repel evil with good. They are promised Paradise, which they will enter along with their righteous forefathers, spouses, and offspring. In contrast, those who break the covenant and spread corruption on earth are cursed and face an evil abode.
- "Say: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah."
- "Say: Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Prevailing."
- "Say: I have only been commanded to worship Allah and not associate any partner with Him."
Remember
Worldly life is declared to be but a small, passing enjoyment compared to the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ is consoled that earlier messengers were likewise mocked and denied, yet Allah always made truth prevail; he is repeatedly commanded to openly proclaim the Oneness of Allah and his own prophethood, declaring that Allah alone is sufficient as a witness between him and the disbelievers.
Rule
Al-Qamar 54:10 (prayer for the time of helplessness) — اَنِّىْ مَغْلُوْبٌ فَانْتَصِرْ — Translation: Indeed, I have been overpowered, so help me.
