Surah Ash-Shura

Definition

Surah Ash-Shura is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah, when the Prophet ﷺ was inviting people to Islam and the Makkan polytheists were rejecting his call and causing him distress. It is the 62nd surah in order of revelation and the 42nd in the Mushaf order, with five ruku and 53 verses.

Its central theme is beliefs (Aqaid), and its name highlights the importance of mutual consultation (Shura).

Definition

The Prophet's ﷺ responsibility is only to convey Allah's message, not to compel belief. Allah reassured him that if the polytheists reject his call, he should not grieve, since he was not appointed their guardian nor is he answerable for their deeds — their reckoning rests with Allah alone. He was directed to invite people as commanded, not follow their desires, and to declare belief in every Book Allah has revealed.

Definition

Allah has prescribed the same religion enjoined upon Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa and Isa (peace be upon them) — to establish the faith and not be divided in it. Allah guides to Himself whoever turns to Him.

Rule

Ash-Shura 42:37 — وَ الَّذِیْنَ یَجْتَنِبُوْنَ كَبٰٓئِرَ الْاِثْمِ وَ الْفَوَاحِشَ وَ اِذَا مَا غَضِبُوْا هُمْ یَغْفِرُوْنَ — Translation: And those who avoid the major sins and shameful acts, and when they are angry, they forgive.

Ash-Shura 42:38 — وَ الَّذِیْنَ اسْتَجَابُوْا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَ اَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَ اَمْرُهُمْ شُوْرٰی بَیْنَهُمْ وَ مِمَّا رَزَقْنٰهُمْ یُنْفِقُوْنَ — Translation: And those who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation among themselves, and spend out of what We have provided them.

Remember

Consultation is a vital Quranic principle: it brings the best opinion to light and makes reaching a good outcome easier. Even though the Prophet ﷺ received revelation, he was commanded to consult his Companions (RA), so that mutual unity, trust, and collective life would be strengthened — hence the surah is named "Ash-Shura", and settling mutual affairs through consultation is described as a defining quality of true believers.

Definition

Allah communicates with a human being in three ways: (1) through direct revelation/inspiration placed into the heart; (2) from behind a veil, by voice, without being seen; or (3) by sending a messenger (angel) who conveys whatever revelation He wills.

Rule

Ash-Shura 42:23 (the Prophet's ﷺ only requested reward) — قُلْ لَّآ اَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَیْهِ اَجْرًا اِلَّا الْمَوَدَّةَ فِی الْقُرْبٰی — Translation: Say: I do not ask you for any reward for this except love for [my] kinship.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3786 (the two things left for guidance) — یَآ اَیُّهَاالنَّاسُ اِنِّیْ قَدْ تَرَکْتُ فِیْکُمْ مَآ اِنِ اَخَذْتُمْ بِهٖ لَنْ تَضِلُّوْا کِتَابَ اللّٰهِ وَ عِتْرَتِیْ اَهْلَ بَیْتِیْ — Translation: O people! I am leaving among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah, and my kindred, the people of my household.
